Terms

Plainly written. Read once.

last updated · 2026-04-17

By using this website, reserving a scribe name, or subscribing to Vellum, you agree to the following. If any of this does not suit you, do not use the service.

Pre-alpha status

Vellum is a work in progress. There is no release date. Features described on this site or in the devlog may change, be removed, or not ship at all. A subscription during pre-alpha grants access to the build as it exists at the time, which may be incomplete, unstable, or temporarily unavailable.

The Scribe's Pledge (subscription)

The Pledge is a monthly subscription. Two tiers are offered: Pledged at €5 per month and Binding at €15 per month. Both tiers grant the same access and experience inside the game. Binding adds out-of-game extras — a printed annual devlog volume and priority on direct replies from the engineer.

You may cancel at any time. No penalty. Where mandatory law grants withdrawal rights — for example, the 14-day withdrawal right in the EU — those rights apply. Paused or cancelled subscriptions do not erase your character, inventory, or progress; only in-game access during the unpaid period is suspended.

Prices may be updated over time. Subscribers who were active at the moment of a price change keep the price at which they originally subscribed, for as long as they remain continuously subscribed (grandfathering).

Scribes who are subscribed at any point before public launch keep the permanent first scribes credit in the game's titles, even if they cancel the day after launch.

Pledge Tokens and in-game marketplace

Each month of subscription is represented by a consumable in-game object called a Pledge Token. When you subscribe with euros, Vellum delivers a Pledge Token to your account and redeems it to grant one month of access. Pledge Tokens may also be purchased from other players on the in-game marketplace in exchange for in-game gold.

Pledge Tokens are records inside Vellum's database. They are not crypto, not NFTs, not blockchain assets, and are not transferable outside of Vellum. They have no value outside the game. They cannot be redeemed, converted, or cashed out for currency of any kind.

Vellum may charge a marketplace fee on each Pledge Token trade, paid in in-game gold and destroyed on settlement. No marketplace fee is charged in euros.

No cash-out. There is no mechanism — within Vellum or through any third party sanctioned by Vellum — to convert in-game gold, in-game items, or Pledge Tokens into euros or any other real-world currency. Euros flow only from the player to Vellum, never in the opposite direction.

Vellum may impose operational limits on Pledge Token marketplace activity — maximum simultaneous listings per account, cooldowns between listings, per-account monthly caps on traded volume — to prevent abuse including but not limited to botting, gold-farming, and account laundering. Limits may be adjusted without prior notice in response to observed abuse.

Accounts

You are responsible for the security of your account. Pick a password you do not use elsewhere. One person, one account.

Vellum may suspend or terminate an account used for harassment, cheating, account sharing, Pledge Token marketplace abuse, or any conduct that damages the game or the room.

Availability

The website and, later, the game are provided as-is. Vellum runs in a browser; browser compatibility is best-effort across modern releases of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. There is no uptime guarantee. There is one engineer, and the service will go down when the engineer is asleep and something breaks.

Intellectual property

Vellum — the name, the writing on this site, the code and art of the game — is the work of the engineer. You may quote from the devlog or this site, with or without credit, as long as you do not claim it as your own.

Limitation of liability

Vellum is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from use of the service. Where mandatory law grants stronger protections, those protections apply in full.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which the engineer is resident. Consumer rights under mandatory local law are not affected.

Changes

These terms may be updated. Significant changes will be noted in the devlog and on this page.

Questions about the terms go to engineer@vellum.game.
